Dance Tip: Posture
Wedding Planning Tip: Wedding Shoes

Being nervous and insecure tends to show in one's posture. When a couple is dancing in front of a crowd and clinging to each other with their heads down and shoulders rounded, onlookers are reminded of their high school prom.  Wedding dresses and tuxedos always look their best when you stand up straight with your shoulders back, neck straight and chin held high. Therefore, whether you are walking down the aisle, exchanging vows during the ceremony, or dancing, maintain an erect posture and look each other in the eye. This not only looks better, but is one of the vital techniques for effective leading and following.

Wedding Planning Tip: Wedding Shoes

Deborah Joy, Founder of TWDS has the following suggestions on the topic of wedding shoes: You may opt for an elegant pair of shoes for the ceremony, dance shoes for your “First Dance” and comfortable shoes like beaded ballet slippers or decorate rhinestone studded tennis shoes during the rest of the reception. If you decide to order online or out of a catalog order two pairs to see which fits best and return the ill-fitting pair. Make sure you try them on on carpet so you don't soil the shoes thus making them unreturnable. If you are ordering custom made ballroom dance shoes allow 8-10 weeks for delivery. Once you select the perfect pair, what better way to show off your beautiful new wedding shoes than to walk down the aisle in style! To make a statement about your grand entrance before you even appear consider the use of aisle runners, a red carpet or flower petals. Aisle decorations of any kind are great for building anticipation of the bridal march and useful for formalizing an outdoor wedding plus they protect your new shoes from grass/dirt stains.

My Glass Slipper in Old Town, Alexandria specializes in wedding shoes and accessories. They have the following tips and answers to commonly asked questions:

Shoe Dying Tips:
Making sure the shoes are the appropriate fabric will result in a more similar color when dyed. A shiny dress may not appear to match a crepe shoe even though the dye color is, in fact, perfect.

  • Do not expect your shoes to be dyed overnight. (Your shoe dyer may not even be able to get started on your shoes for a few weeks if he or she is busy.) It may take several days to mix the right color. Often times the color samples must dry overnight. The color may look very different when still wet.
  • Be reasonable. If you expect a shoe dyer to replicate the exact color of your dress, you may be disappointed. When comparing the dyed shoes to the dress, do not press the swatch or the dress up against the shoe to see if it matches. That scenario is not going to happen when the shoes are being worn so it is not a realistic measure. A more realistic gauge is to have someone wear the dyed shoes with the dress and walk around while you stand at least 10-15 feet away. (Keep in mind that you are staring intently at these shoes to see if the color is perfect, it is unlikely your wedding guests will have the same keen eye for this detail).

How far in advance do I need to purchase my shoes?
Most of the shoes ordered from will be shipped within 2-3 days after receiving the order. Others will need to be special ordered and will be shipped in 2-3 weeks.Occasionally, a shoe will be out of stock even at the warehouse and could take many weeks before new stock arrives. (You would be notified if your order was going to be delayed.) If the shoes are to be dyed, factor in that time as well.

The most important deadline to be aware of is the first dress fitting. At the first dress fitting, you must be wearing the correct heel height in order for the seamstress to do the hem. This is no time to guess or estimate the heel height you will be wearing on the big day. Though a dress that is too short is merely a fashion faux pas, a dress that is too long could have disastrous results. You don't want to be walking down the aisle holding up the front of your skirt so as not to trip on it.

Are my shoes supposed to be the same material as my dress?
If the shoes you are ordering are to be worn with a wedding gown, the fabric of the shoe is not critical. White and ivory are very forgiving colors in any lighting condition. Therefore, a bride should not overly concern herself with the fabric of her bridal shoes.

If the shoes are to match a bridesmaid or any special occasion gown that is not white or ivory, the fabric of the shoe should be considered. If the dress is satin or another shiny fabric, get a satin shoe. If the dress is crepe, chiffon, or another non-shiny fabric, get a crepe shoe.

Featured Dance Syle: Tango

The dance's unique style is expressed in quick double takes with the head and stalking panther-like movements complete with lunges and dips. Tango has a flavor quite unlike any other dance. The basic rhythm is an 8 count Slow-Slow-Quick-Quick-Slow. The music itself leads to excess. It is a dance that is ironically both showy, yet very intimate. Tango has also been immortalized in such films as "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse"(Rudolf Valentino)", "True Lies" (Arnold Schwarzenegger) "Assassination Tango" (Robert Duvall) and in “Scent of a Woman" when Al Pacino says, “There are no mistakes in Tango. It’s like life, if you get all tangled up, you tango on.”
** Note: The style of your wedding gown may require a dress and shoe change to perform this dance style comfortably and optimally.

Dinner - Dancing Date Night Restaurant Review!

Bistro Bistro
4021 S. 28th St., Arlington, VA 22206
Phone: 703-379-0300

I've dined here 40-50 times over the years and bring everyone I know here. Bistro Bistro is recommended by Washingtonian Magazine as one of the 100 Best Restaurants and conveniently located just 8 minutes from our Alexandria studio, one block from a movie theatre and smack in the middle of Shirlington Village’s restaurant row. My companions and I have invariably been pleased with food, service and ambience. It serves French, Italian and American style dishes and the all-you-can-eat gourmet Sunday brunch is exquisite! The regular menu is not haute cuisine, but it does not charge haute cuisine prices either. Instead, it presents tasty, interesting, attractive dishes in a quiet, comfortable setting (including outside dining) at a modest and reasonable price. That's what I call good value. Another good sign is that much of the staff has worked there for years. Say “Hi” to Nick, the Manager for me!

Movie Review - Mad Hot Ballroom - Directed by Marilyn Agrelo

A special educational program is set up in 3 cities in New Your for eleven-year-old public school kids to explore the world of ballroom dancing and themselves in the process. These kids are transformed, from willing participants to determined competitors, from typical urban kids to "ladies and gentlemen," on their way to try to compete in the final citywide competition providing unique insight into the incredible cultural variety. It’s a testament to the fact that even pre-teens these days are up for some “good clean fun.”

Wedding Etiquette: Keeping Your Bridal Party “In The Loop” (Reprinted in part from Emily Post)

Planning a wedding is a full time job (that's why there are professional wedding coordinators) The purpose of selecting a bridal party is not just for a photo op. It is to honor the important people in your lives in a special way. In turn, they agree to honor you by accepting the responsibilities that accompany their position in the bridal party. Delegating responsibilities to your bridal party is designed to alleviate the stress of planning a wedding. In general too many fingers in the pot sours the stew. Many engaged couples have learned the hard way that wedding planning details should be divulged only on a need-to know basis. Once you have selected your bridal party you should keep them informed of any plans that involve them in a timely fashion. This will help everyone stay organized and familiarize everyone with each other (if they’ve never met.) The information could include the following:

  1. List of names, addresses and phone numbers of the wedding party
  2. Dates and times of parties and showers to which they will be invited
  3. Rehearsal time and place
  4. Rehearsal dinner arrangements
  5. Hotel accommodations
  6. Wardrobe requirements and helpful warnings such as attire needed for other activities or outside outings.
  7. Any plans for breakfast, lunch or tea before the wedding
  8. Where they will dress
  9. The time and place for any pre-wedding photos
  10. Transportation arrangements to the ceremony and reception.
  11. Provide the Matron of Honor with the wedding day timeline.
  12. Provide the Matron of Honor with a checklist of accessories/items to be collected after the reception.
